Alberto Seveso, is a graphic artist and illustrator, who works freelance from his hometown of Portoscuso, Italy. He was born in Milan, Italy in 1976. His passion for graphic art, began at an early age, he began to seriously enter the art world, at the beginning of the 1990's.

He claims on his site, that his passion for graphic arts began in these years (90's), due to his fascination with album covers on tapes and CD's of metal bands. He said that he started to think of how this artwork could be reproduced.

He had a Commodore Vic20, as his personal computer in the 90's, and he used this to make early artwork.

He does collaborations with other artists, and uses CS6, to produce some of his extreme work.

James Jean

James Jean is an traditional illustrator, who creates digital work. He can be part of my other research, for example, he could fit in the people and characters blog as well as this one. He was born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1979. He is a very famous artist who is well known for his professional commercial work, and also his gallery work. He received a B.F.A at the School of Visual Arts in new York City, USA and has participated in many exhibitions, some of the solo exhibitions that he has partaken in, are as follows below.

2009: Kindling, Jonathan Levine Gallery, New York City.
2011: Rebus, Martha Otero Gallery, Los Angeles in California.
2013: Parallel Lines, Jack Titon Gallery

He is known mostly in America, because of his digital work, creating covers for DC Comics, (see last image below). Note his use of line, and colour.

The image above is an example of his digital work, for DC Comics. I really like the comic style, so naturally this is something that interests me.

I used some elements of James's work, as part of one of my final pieces. I took his usage of colour, as well as his usage of thin line art, and used it to my advantage.

Jason Seiler

http://jasonseiler.com/portfolio/character-design/warriorgnome/#main < Image reference.

Jason Seiler is an illustrator who lives in Toronto. He specialises in creating caricatures, portraits, and comedic illustration.
He also teaches in caricatures. He started out in an unusual way for an illustrator to be noticed, getting into trouble drawing his history teacher, as a caricature in high school. He first became noticed by his principal at the time, who hired him to draw caricatures of various faculty members. He went on to study fine art illustration at the American Academy of art in Chicago, after this.

http://jasonseiler.com/portfolio/caricatures/golfdigest_monroe_dimaggio_hemingway-2/#main < Image reference.

He has published two books on his artwork, featuring many humorous images from his illustrations. he has also published an instructional DVD, called sketching with Jason Seiler.

Some of his many clients, include TIME magazine, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and MAD Magazine, New Line Cinema. He uses a lot of digital manipulation in his varied artwork, especially with his caricature work. (See images)

He is a member of the society of illustrators in New York City. He also has been an art instructor for a few years.

Interestingly, his digital artwork resembles that of caricature art. I have enjoyed researching this artist, but I do not wish to take influence from him, as I don't want to go down the route of this style. I will say though, that he is an incredibly talented artist, nonetheless.

Ani Roschier (ani-r)

Ani Roschier, is a professional digital concept artist/illustrator from Finland, who I have selected to do some research on.

http://colorrred.com/art/environments/very-high-up/ < image reference at this link.

You can find him, and his work on his site, at deviant art > http://ani-r.deviantart.com
He can also be found here, at coloured.com > http://colorrred.com

I asked him a few questions through email, that I thought would be relevant to my research. I am so happy to say, that he has replied to my questions. I will place the questions and answers below this text.

I will also highlight key points in his answers, to label them as noteworthy info.

-----------------

1. Have you graduated from a university?
Yes. I graduated from a university of applies sciences with a degree in 3D visualization and animation (4,5 years of studies). It should be taken into account though, that this did not in any way teach me what I know, quite the opposite. Whatever merit and skill I have in drawing and painting is self-taught.

How did you start out your career as an illustrator?
I started doing requests for people when I got into the online art communities like Elfwood and dA when I was 13-14, and then progressed into doing commissions for people around 16-17 and around that same time also did my first commercial illustrations for a few magazines and newspapers. Since then I've always been doing freelance on the side and it just sort of evolved into bigger and bigger things.

What is your favourite software to produce digital work with?
3. Photoshop! It's mostly because of habit. I taught myself photoshop as it has always been said to be an industry standard (and it is true) so I've been using it since I was 13-14 and it has become the easiest tool for me.

How hard is it in the industry for an illustrator today, in your opinion?
Define the terms industry, illustrator? The terms can mean almost anything because there are so many types of illustration and art related jobs. You can illustrate storybooks, posters, business mascots or you can work in games as a concept artist or in the movies or advertising and still call your work 'illustration' so its really hard to define. I can only speak for myself though; although illustrating (concept art and production art) for video games is a hugely sought after job at the moment (it seems like something a lot more people want to do than the industry can accommodate) the games industry (especially mobile platform) keeps expanding so there seems to be a demand for new artists... so I'd say it could be fairly easy as long as you set your goals on a realistic level (I cant stress this enough) - you cant expect to get hired for AAA games with zero experience or with little skill when youre really young, you have to start smaller and work your way up to get experience on studio and illustration workflows and so on! Maybe start at a small studio or work as a freelancer for indie developers and move up from there, that is completely doable! As you gain experience with different types of illustration and art production, you can aim higher and yes, maybe work for an AAA studio if you still want it.

Any last tips for being a professional illustrator?
Some of the stuff from the previous question applies. Set realistic goals for your career or dream job. You will fail if your only aim is to work on the next Final Fantasy or something similar. Keep practising and update your skills. Attitude: don't have an attitude; I swear, even if you're really skilled at something but have a bad attitude (uppity, don't listen to criticism, refuse to question your approach) no team will want to work with you. Variety; draw everything and everything. It is unlikely you will only get to draw your favorite thing - therefore, the wider variety of things and styles you can draw, the more guaranteed your livelihood is. That said, specialise on one or two things you really like! Being able to draw a wide range of subject matters makes you a credible artist and is very important, but also on top of that specializing in something makes you stand out and may improve your chances to get to draw your favorite thing.

I have added him on my deviant art account page, and I will be communicating more with this experienced artist, in the future I hope.

Justin Currie

Justin Currie, otherwise known as ChasingArtwork, on the art website, Deviant Art > http://chasingartwork.deviantart.com (Also on Blogspot > http://currieart.blogspot.co.uk)
Is a professional digital based artist, who is from Canada.

He creates a large range of artwork,in a variety of different styles, using such software programs as adobe photoshop. He also uses wacom Cintiqs, something which I think is worth of taking note, since I often use these graphics tablets to produce digital work, on the iMacs at the university studio room.

Below is a few examples of the wide assortment of artwork, techniques and styles that he uses.

As you can see, he is highly talented in many types of drawing, from animal figures, to human and landscapes.

I love this artist, and I will be following him on deviant art, to see if I can find more out, about himself, and I will be asking him a few questions, to add to my research. (Update, awaiting reply).

Michael mantel is an digital illustrator, who creates work in the cartoon style. He begins his pieces with a rough sketch on paper, and then transfers them onto digital software applications. He is a client of such companies as Handelsblatt, Mobile.de and Fit for Fun.

I'm really into his type of artistic style, I love his single colour tone scheme, in different areas of the image. For example the beige of the hat and scarf, and the dark brown of the hair and jacket.

Julia Kay

http://studiojuliakay.com/art/

Julia L. Kay is an American digital and traditional based artist, who creates drawings, paintings, photographs and murals of various different objects, things and items. She graduated in a BA of Photography, from Wesleyan University in Connecticut, and has done some work at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, in Maryland. She personally interests me as a digital artist, due to her eye-catching creations of canines.

http://studiojuliakay.com/juliaKayPhoto128.html

She uses a thick, broad line styles coupled with minimal detail. This is something which I do myself, when sketching animals such as dogs. In a way I personally feel that I connect to her work, in terms of style and technique.

http://studiojuliakay.com/juliaKayPhoto250.html

Another example of her thick use of line style, in an entire series called "Ruby & Ringo Sketchbook".

The link to her gallery on this series, is below this text.

I think I will take some inspiration from her styles, and portray it onto one of my own final illustrations.

http://studiojuliakay.com/juliaKayIndex126.html

I created a tester, of a dog in the style of Julia Kay.

A digital tester, using a similar colour scheme, against a contrasting background, like in Julia's style.
