Digital Tester #8

Tried my hand at sketching something using photoshop cc, in my personal time. Thought i'd include it as part of my digital trial work.

Most of my digital testers that I have created in this unit, are just me practising how I can create my finals in the digital medium. I found through practise, it made me feel more confident about creating and developing the 4 digital final pieces.

Final Piece #2 Image

Ruby, the west highland terrier, that I created in Photoshop to be my second, final digital image.
I really like the turn out of this image, it appears to be very detailed and textured, this is what I wanted in my second final image, for the piece to have a bit more detail than the last one. (Gecko sketch link below) >

I again, like my first image, took inspiration from the artist griffsnuff (Bold lines, colour, and overall cartoon visual look). However, I also took elements from a few other research artists, such as Julia Kay with her usage of mark making using lines.

In the image above, note the mark making lines on the right dog. The shade lines in the middle are very rough, however they allow for simple shading to be recognised. I tried to go for a similar approach, however tweaked slightly. I used this rough line style, coupled with a darker background in the area I wanted to appear shaded. This is prominent on the left side of my canine illustration, where the shadows are supposed to be. Also, like Julia Kay, I took influence with her contrasting look, as well as minimal approach, of a strong line colour, against a background that would display the image as clear as possible.

I created a tester, of a dog in the style of Julia Kay.

Justin Currie

Is a professional digital based artist, who is from Canada. 

He creates a large range of artwork,in a variety of different styles, using such software programs as adobe photoshop. He also uses wacom Cintiqs, something which I think is worth of taking note, since I often use these graphics tablets to produce digital work, on the iMacs at the university studio room.

As you can see, he is highly talented in many types of drawing, from animal figures, to human and landscapes.

I love this artist, and I will be following him on deviant art, to see if I can find more out, about himself, and I will be asking him a few questions, to add to my research. (Update, awaiting reply).

Wacom Cintiq Tablets

I touched on these using these nice wacom tablets briefly last month, in an introductory session, but yesterday afternoon with the technician Graeme, I opened CS6 (photoshop) and tried experimenting, with his pointers and useful tips at my side. I thought it would be uncomfortable to draw on the tablets while at a horizontal angle, but it turned out to not be an issue, after getting used to the feel of the brush.

I began trying to draw a coloured cartoon wolf, just as a photoshop tester, and after practising with several brushes, and styles, I got the hang of pulling up the brush menu, and being able to tweak the size, angle, and colour of the selected brush.

I really would love a copy of photoshop to work with personally, so in the new year I will be attempting to purchase a copy of photoshop, either CS5 or Elements. For now, I may download the trial, just to practise more, when I cannot access the macs at uni.
